Notice what gets you excited

Hi Reader

When I was a kid, I used to love going to the theatre with my mum. My favourite part wasn’t the acting, the dialogue or even the story. It was the visual stuff, like the set and costumes.

There was the thrill of the unexpected. Like a set that moved or transformed in front of our eyes. I still remember the thrill of seeing actors whizz by our seats for Starlight Express.

But nothing tickled me more than the extravagance of a pantomime finale. The actors would wear fresh, sparkly costumes for just one scene. It was equal parts absurd and magical.

Whatever THAT was, I wanted more of it.

Even today, I love watching creativity in motion.

There's nothing I find more exciting than seeing an idea come to life. Whether I'm workshopping ideas with a brand designer or talking to a tradie about building a desk.

That’s why I enjoyed collaborating with copywriter Anna Rogan.

Last week we both answered the same question from two different angles. How do you hone your creative instincts and improve your storytelling craft?

Anna considered whether talent or training is at the heart of creativity. You can read her response here.

And in case you missed it, my answer is here.

As chance would have it, there was one piece of advice we both gave.

Put yourself in the way of creativity and notice what makes you interested.

It’s simple. Not rocket science. But that’s what creativity is. Being an active observer of the world around you and bringing your own interpretation to it.

I hope you find time to get creative this weekend.

Be in touch,

Sara

Hi Reader, I was walking to my local coffee shop when I saw this guy coming in the other direction. He was medium height, and pretty handsome. He was also my husband, on the way back from dropping our girls at school. In the split second when I realised the guy coming into focus was my partner, my heart lifted. I was hit with a thud of gratitude. How lucky am I at how my life has panned out? When you’ve been married for more than a decade, it’s easy to get lost in domestic drudgery. But...
